Measles

Measles: as Vancouver, Canada has recently had a measles alert put out for certain locations, I think it’s pertinent to remind everyone how important having your child vaccinated is! Your child will got their measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccine at the age of 12 months and their MMR- Varicella between 4-6 years.

Measles is very contagious and is passed through air particles from sneezing and coughing and can remain in the air or on surfaces for up to two hours (and then introduced to another person if they breathe that air or touch that area and put their hands in their mouths, nose or eyes). Measles symptoms present 7-21 days after exposure. Symptoms include runny nose, red eyes, fever, cough, irritability, or drowsiness. It may also cause white spots in the mouth or throat, these are known as Koplik spots and your doctor will look for these! 3-7 days after symptoms begin, a red rash appears starting on the face and moving down the body. It can take up to 3 weeks for the body to clear the virus but there may be lasting complications in 25% of people including: pneumonia, ear infections, diarrhea, hearing loss, encephalitis, meningitis, seizure and in some severe cases death.
