Pretend Play

Pretend Play

Pretend play: at our last coffee date together (ie when mommy needed coffee…) my daughter wanted to hold my coffee cup, so I got her her own cup and we drank our “coffees” together. The cutest part was she learned how to do cheers and she made me do it every time we took a sip.
▪️ Pretend play is important for our little ones. They usually start pretend play around 18 months, but you may see them pretend to talk on a phone, clean with brooms and mops, or drink coffee like mommy/daddy before that. Pretend play starts off using children’s versions of everyday items, it then moves onto using basic objects as other things (ex. A box turns into a spaceship…). Studies have shown that play can enhance all aspects of school success including abstract thinking, and taking other people’s perspectives. (Ourkidsnetwork.ca has a great article on this- check it out for more info!)

So keep “answering” the phone when your little one pretends to talk on the phone, having coffee dates with your little ones and sweeping the floor together! ▪️
What pretend play does your little one do? ▪️
